My Yelp review of abistro:
When my boyfriend had an unexpected Friday night free from his crazy work schedule, we decided to check out abistro. (We had tried to visit it once before and found the wait unbearable — the restaurant is small, and we had had the misfortune of arriving just after a large birthday party.)
We started with the evening’s appetizer, the most incredible plantains. I missed the description provided by our server, so I can’t tell you exactly what was in them, but I can tell you how they tasted: amazing. Their outsides were sticky and sweet, their insides were firm and starchy, and there was a chipotle dipping sauce on the side — which was a little superfluous but delicious nonetheless.
The boyfriend ordered the mussels and frites, and I had the salmon, which came on top of jalapeno polenta and kale. I also discovered small chunks of beet in the kale, and abistro gets bonus points for serving me beets that I actually ate. (One of my 2009 resolutions was to learn to eat beets; I failed.)
I can’t wait to go back. (There’s a marinated tofu with stewed strawberries on the menu that I just have to try …) The fact that the restaurant is BYO is just icing on the cake.
