Wanderlust Wednesday: Leshan Giant Buddha

I have seen a fair number of really big buddhas in my day, including the formerly largest bronze seated outdoor buddha and the largest reclining buddha in Thailand.  This guy, the Leshan Giant Buddha, has the distinction of being the largest carved stone buddha in the world.

Leshan, China, 2007

He can be found in Leshan, which is near Chengdu, China.  When Marc and I were in China in 2007, we took a day trip to Leshan in order to see this guy.  There’s a staircase carved into the side of the rock surrounding him, and you can climb up to the level around his head.  His size becomes more astonishing when you’re looking him right in the enormous eye.
