I complain a lot in this post

See the post title?  Consider yourself warned.

You guys, I am so tired.  Things have been pretty busy insane at work lately, and Monday was no exception.  I didn’t make it home from work until 4:30 a.m. Tuesday morning, and I needed to be at Penn Station in time for an 8:00 a.m. train to a hearing.  My alarm went off at 6:00 a.m. so that I could shower, gather my things, and get myself to the train, so that meant I got a little less than 90 minutes of fitful sleep.

My original plan had been to get up early to vote before I left for the hearing, but I realized that wasn’t in the cards around 2:15 a.m. when I found myself locked out of my office by the cleaning staff with mountains of work left to do.  Instead, I left work shortly after 5:00 p.m. so that I could get to my polling place before things got too crazy.

This is me last night. Look how tired I am; my glasses aren’t even on straight.

I might have made it had the MTA not been conspiring against me.  Subway service is still recovering post-Sandy, and, to make matters worse, there had been an “earlier incident” on my line.1 I decided to take the a different train instead, which shouldn’t have been a problem, but, once this train had crossed the bridge to Brooklyn, it kept stopping and ended up taking 45 minutes to go a distance that usually  takes no more than 3 or 4.

And then I stood in line at my polling place (currently doubling as an evacuation center) for 2 hours.

Upon finally arriving home, I wanted to go immediately to bed and sleep for 3 days, but I also wanted to stay up and watch the returns, and, because I am horrible at taking care of myself, that’s exactly what I did.

And today was another chaotic (but thankfully nowhere near as long) day.  And so I am tired.  Oh, and have I mentioned we are having some sort of freaky Nor’easter?

Untitled

Yeah. That looks like lovely snow, but it’s actually snow accompanied by sideways-blowing wintry mix.  The kind that hurts when it hits you in the face.

1 What does that mean? It’s so ambiguous!

the one time I forget my iPhone on my desk

I went to the firm cafeteria around 6 pm to grab a soda. (Don’t judge. It was a Diet Dr. Pepper. And I knew I was going to be in the for the long haul tonight.) So I grab my soda and head to the register and happen to notice a stack of pizza boxes. ON FIRE. I’m not talking about some smoldering pizza boxes (which would still be kind of intriguing); I’m talking about flames, serious FLAMES, leaping from the boxes.

And, of course, I forgot my iPhone on my desk. Sorry. This post would definitely be improved by the inclusion of a picture of fire.

Anyway, a cafeteria employee smothered the flames (I think, anyway – she did it behind the counter, but the place hasn’t burned down yet, so I’m going to assume she successfully put out the fire) and I returned to my desk.

(Where I remain. Sigh.)

what happens to lost locks

If you’re an email subscriber and you received notice that I had posted for the first time since March, only to find out that it was just a random picture of a lock, well, sorry.  You might think I forgot how to post, but, in reality, I just don’t know how to use the WordPress app on my iPhone.

Anyway, let’s skip right past why I haven’t posted since March1 and let me amuse you with my absentmindedness.  I showed up at the gym last Wednesday and couldn’t find my lock.  (Yes, that same wily lock shown below that managed to finagle its own post.)  After turning my gym bag inside out, I resigned myself to walking across the street to the Duane Reade to buy a new lock.  This sucks, I thought.  That lock had the best combination.  (This is true.  I wish I could tell you the combination so you could agree, but then I’d have to kill you.)  How did I even lose my lock to begin with?

And then it dawned on me: I hadn’t lost my lock (because, honestly, how would I have done that?  — it’s not like I take it out of my gym bag to show off at work or anything); I had left my lock.  And guess what?  Equinox keeps abandoned locks in a bucket in the coat check, and there it was, waiting for me.

my lock that keeps running away from home. I think it’s going through a rebellious phase.

I was so careful not to leave my lock at the gym again that day. But (and you totally see where this is going) I showed up to the gym this morning and, once again, that lock was nowhere in my bag.  I looked through every crevice for it because I knew – I just knew – I wouldn’t have lost it again.  I have been going to the gym for years and last week was the first time I had ever left a lock in the locker room.  I just couldn’t have done it again.  Alas, my certainty didn’t change the fact that my lock was gone.  Shame-faced, I slunk up to the coat check and asked the lady if there were any lost locks.  She handed it to me (let’s not dwell on how embarrassing it was that she remembered which lock was mine), and I promised not to leave it behind again.

Let’s see how well that goes.

1 Or I can sum it up in 6 words or less: 2012 is the worst year ever.  That was easy.

Happy Friday

A couple of pictures for your Friday (let’s pretend it isn’t Saturday yet):

First, I’ve had quiet week in the office and so I spent some time cleaning my desk. I came across this “fortune” from the inside of a European (Slovenian?) candy my officemate brought me at some point (Christmas?).  It’s a variation of “fortune favors the bold:” “fortune prefers those who do not sit around and wait for it.”  I think that’s brilliant.

Second, I went to the dentist yesterday morning.  I don’t hate going to the dentist – I have the best dentist in Brooklyn, seriously, he’s awesome – but nonetheless I don’t enjoy being at any appointment in Park Slope at 8:00 a.m.   I was pleasantly surprised to see these blossoms as I was leaving the dentist.  It looks like spring!

Happy Friday!  Hope your weekends are great!

it’s the first day of spring!

Happy first day of spring!  I know, it seems a bit anticlimactic after the “winter” we had this year, but I for one am thrilled that spring is officially here!  I need some green grass and fresh flowers in my life.

Doesn’t that picture just make you excited for spring? I love robins.

Of course, if that picture doesn’t do it for you, there’s this one:

Ha!  I thought that was supremely appropriate, considering I just finished the book this evening and am currently trying to plan a movie date with my girlfriends.

snowy Saturday

First snow of 2012!

And more on the way!

3-5 inches of snow!

Now, I know (read: saw all over facebook) that good old Chicago got hit with some serious snow.

I refuse to allow that to diminish my enjoyment of this snow.  I have grand plans of cuddling indoors and organizing things all day, with maybe a break to make some homemade soup.  (I thought I saw the boy bring home all the ingredients for my favorite split pea soup from the store last weekend …)  I should probably fold some laundry and do a little bit of work as well, but I plan to do it all without putting on real clothes or my contacts.  Sometimes I love a good reason to stay indoors.

Happy snow day!

fog doesn’t photograph well

As I was leaving this gym this evening, there was this light fog all through Midtown. Times Square looked soft and a little blurry, like it was a dream.

I should have known better than to think I could capture that with the camera on my phone.

The fog descending over the city has gotten thicker since I’ve been home; I can’t see Manhattan at all from my window. Although fog is more fun to walk through than a blizzard by leaps and bounds, I can’t help but be a little jealous of the snow the Midwest is receiving.
